ABSTRACT: Laboratory-bred larvae spawned from three ovigerous females that had been collected on Margarita Island,Venezuela, allowed for the redescription and illustration of the two zoeal and one megalopal stages of P. magdalenensis, andfor their comparison with larval characterization of crabs by other authors. The zoeae of P. magdalenensis are similar tothose of Group 4 identified by Osawa (1995) and subsequent authors, but show meristic and morphometric differences relativeto previous descriptions of samples recruited in Santa Marta, Colombia. Like those of P. tredentatus, P. tonsorius, and P.violaceus, the zoeae of P. magdalenensis have a hook-like process in the coxopodite of the first maxilliped. The paperproposes to amend Group 4 in order to both characterize that process as a selective response and remove the four formerly described congeneric species from it to allow the creation of a new larval group, Group 8, to comprise them. |
