Resumen : The human being since its origin has used natural medicine as a tool to seek calm to the affections that have existed throughout history and with it in the course of time has given endless benefits to humanity. According to OMS, traditional medicine is an important and often underestimated part of health services. Basil has long been used in folk medicine as an anti-inflammatory and analgesic and for the treatment of symptoms such as headache, diarrhea, constipation, indigestion and cough. The discovery of natural product studies with ingredients that have intrinsic antibacterial activity and/or can be used in combination with standard antibiotics may prove to be a viable alternative for the production of new drugs effective against multidrug-resistant microorganisms. OBJECTIVE: To demonstrate the in vitro antimicrobial effect of aqueous and ethanolic extracts of Ocimun basilicum against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli strains. METHODS: Experimental study with a multifactorial design. RESULTS: Upon exposure of the aqueous and ethanolic extract of Ocimun Basilicum and its different dilutions 1:10, 1:20, 1:40, for 24 hours at their ideal temperatures, normal bacterial growth was observed, and no inhibition-resistance in the different solutions of Ocimun Basilicum respectively. CONCLUSIONS: The aqueous and ethanolic extract of Ocimun Basilicum by the decoction and macerate method did not show antimicrobial activity against Staphylococcus aureus, Pseudomonas aeruginosa and Escherichia coli. Despite the promising properties attributed to this leaf in other aspects of health. Considering that it is complicated to control the amount of active principle extracted by decoction, maceration and the potential mechanisms of these pharmacological activities, since they have not been fully explored, in this research it was intended to reproduce under controlled conditions and in a standardized way the ethanolic and aqueous extract by decoction and maceration of the leaves of Ocimun basilicum, since it is the popular way of preparation of the plant by people in their homes.
