Título : UNA NUEVA ESPECIE DE EURYHALIOTREMA KRITSKY Y BOEGER, 2002 (MONOGENEA) ENCONTRADA EN BRANQUIAS DE LUTJANUSGRISEUS (PERCIFORMES: LUTJANIDAE) DE LA ISLA DE MARGARITA, VENEZUELA
ABSTRACT: This paper characterizes a new species, Euryhaliotrema griseus (Monogenea: Dactylogyridae), that dwells
on the gills of the Gray snapper, Lutjanus griseus (Pisces: Lutjanidae) in La Restinga Lagoon, on Margarita Island, Venezuela,
with an infestation prevalence of 95.70%, and a mean intensity of 28 parasites out of a range of 3 to 70. Among the features
that set this new species apart from others of the same genus are the morphology of the copulatory apparatus and the shape
and structure of both the vagina and the anchor-bar complex. E. griseus resembles both E. atlantica and E. carbunculus in the
length and shape of the copulatory organ, but differs from the former in that it lacks both the articulated process at the base
of the accessory piece and the protuberance bulb of the vaginal opening, and from the latter in that it has a comparatively
shorter and straighter vaginal canal.2006-01-01T00:00:00ZDEPENDENCIA DE PEQUEÑAS LAGUNETAS Y CHARCAS COSTERAS PARA LA AVIFAUNA RESIDENTE Y MIGRATORIA: DOS CASOS EN VENEZUELA

migratorias neárticas, 1 migratoria austral, 16 migratorias locales, 2 migratorias intratropicales y 23 residentes.
ABSTRACT: Wetland birds have been poorly sampled, their counterparts in coastal habitats being the focus of ecological
criteria for community assessment. This study encompasses the monthly inventories of the avifauna frequenting two shallow
lagoons in the northeast of Venezuela, viz., Tronconal, a 33 ha. urban pond, and Punta Escarceo, an isolated lagoon stretching
over 27 hectares. Fifty species comprising 1585 individuals belonging to 24 families and 13 orders were surveyed in Tronconal.
Twenty-seven species were migrants (eight neartic, one austral, two intertropical, and 16 local) and 23 were resident fowl. No
remarkable differences were found regarding the number of species (28.5 ± 0.57 vs. 26.25 ± 1.89) or individuals (200 ± 44.23
vs. 196 ± 50.85) between the rainy and dry seasons. 33% of the species were prevalential, 38.6% habitual, and 28.1%
occasional. A passeriform, Agelaius icterocephalus, was the dominant species, followed by the herons Egretta thula and Ardea
alba. Families Tyrannidae (n=7) and Ardeidae (n=6) contributed the largest number of species. There was an evident intermonthly
similarity (>60%). A total of 3625 specimens constituting 24 species, 11 families, and seven orders were counted in Punta
Escarceo for three months. Seven species (29.2%) were resident and 17 (70.8%) were transient, with a relatively prevailing
abundance of neartic charadriforms (e.g., Tringa spp., Calidris spp.). Because of the extensive use that birds make of these
wetlands, it is advisable that both perspective and prospective studies be undertaken to safeguard the preservation of the avifauna.2006-01-01T00:00:00ZCRECIMIENTO SOMÁTICO Y RELACIÓN ARN/ADN EN JUVENILES DE LA SARDINA SARDINELLA AURITAVALENCIENNES, 1847 (PISCES: CLUPEIDAE) DEL GOLFO DE SANTA FE, VENEZUELA

ABSTRACT: Sardine fishing is one of the most important economic activities in eastern Venezuela. For this reason,
knowledge of the sardine’s life cycle and of its growth rate in particular, is of the utmost importance. The aim of this study
was to determine the somatic and biochemical growth as well as the age of Sardinella aurita, juveniles of which were collected
with thrown fish nets in the Gulf of Santa Fe. Their growth was evaluated by applying RNA/DNA indices, and quantified in
terms of muscle tissue by fluorometry, while their age was ascertained by growth rim analysis of their otolith saggitae. Juveniles
ranging between 82 to 122 days showed a size range of 101-130 mm LT and a mass from 7.5 up to 16.2 g, respectively, their
mean RNA to DNA ratio standing at 1.039 ± 0.476. The results obtained in this research reflected an evident relationship
between somatic and biochemical growth, the RNA/DNA index posing as a tool of swift and easy application that could be
resorted to as a matter of course in the study of growth rate of marine fishes.2006-01-01T00:00:00ZBIODISPONIBILIDAD DE METALES TRAZA EN SEDIMENTOS SUPERFICIALES DEL ECOSISTEMA LAGUNAR COSTERO BOCARIPO-CHACOPATA (PENÍNSULA DE ARAYA, ESTADO SUCRE)

Título : BIODISPONIBILIDAD DE METALES TRAZA EN SEDIMENTOS SUPERFICIALES DEL ECOSISTEMA LAGUNAR COSTERO BOCARIPO-CHACOPATA (PENÍNSULA DE ARAYA, ESTADO SUCRE)

ABSTRACT: Atomic absorption spectrophotometry was used to assess the bioavailable contents of zinc, iron, manganese,
copper, chromium, cadmium, lead, and nickel in surface sediments taken at a depth between 10 and 20cm from 10 sampling
stations at Laguna de Caripo and 10 sampling stations at Laguna de Chacopata. The diameter of the particles, the total organic
content, and the pH of the sediments have an important influence on the bioavailable levels of trace metals, as evidenced at
the end of the rainy season in November 2003, at the peak of the dry season in March 2004, and at the onset of the rainy
season in July 2004. The mean concentration of Fe, Zn, Cd, Cr, and Ni (62.15, 5.13, 0.05, 0.15, and 0.04 mg/kg of dried mass,
respectively) was higher in Bocaripo than that of the same elements in Chacopata, where Pb, Mn, and Cu yielded higher
concentrations (6.30, 5.72, and 0.32 mg/kg of dried mass, respectively). Significant statistical differences were observed for
the Fe, Pb, and Mn of the Bocaripo Lagoon as seen from one climatic period to another, whereas Cr and Mn were statistically
different among sampling stations, a phenomenon also observed in the Chacopata Lagoon for the concentrations of Fe, Cu,
and Zn. The bioavailable content of Fe in the Bocaripo Lagoon could represent a potential polluting risk as, in very reducing
environments, it can affect the mobility of other metals towards the solution by creating oxidizing conditions that prompt a
strong acidification response.2006-01-01T00:00:00Z
