Título : METALES PESADOS EN SEDIMENTOS SUPERFICIALES DEL GOLFO DE CARIACO, VENEZUELA
ABSTRACT: The heavy metals Cd, Zn, Cu, Cr, Ni and Pb were determined to establish baseline levels and contamination in
surface sediments of the Gulf of Cariaco, affected by industrial and urban development. Analyzed samples sediment correspond to
21 stations established along the North and South coasts and a central transect of the Gulf. The powdered sediments were digested
according to the method from CARMODY et al. (1973) and additional digestion with H2O2 and the quantification of the metals by
Atomic Absorption Espectrometry , using a Perkin Elmer model 3110. The concentration of heavy metals in the sediments ranged
from: Cd (0.00-6.21 μg/g), Zn (2.01-222.42 μg/g), Cu (0.63-67.01 μg/g), Cr (2.51-97.15 μg/g), Ni (2.01-49.87 μg/g) and Pb (0.00-37.08 μg/
g), the distribution of these trace metals was irregular, reflecting an increment of the concentration towards the central part of the
Gulf. In a same way, the sediments of the North coast of the Gulf of Cariaco present higher concentrations to those obtained for the
South coast, except for Pb. This can be a consequence of the circulation pattern that reigns in the Gulf, upwelling which is more
intense toward the central part of the north coast of the Gulf and to the litological composition of the sediments. On the other hand,
a strong anthropogenetic influence is observed that affects Pb concentrations and other metals contained in the surface sediments of
this region.

(11º - 17º Lat. N. y 61º y 75º long. W) y Océano Atlántico (5º - 17º Lat. N y 50º y 60º Long. W).
observaron diferencias significativas. ABSTRACT: Based on information from logbooks for the period 1986-2000 we analyz catch, effort and catch per unit of effort
(CPUE) for the small longline tuna fishery from eastern Venezuela. The total fishing area was divided into two subareas in accordance
with their different hydrological regimes: Caribbean Sea (11º - 17º Lat. N. and 61º -75º Long. W) and Atlantic Ocean (5º - 17º Lat. N.
and 50º and 60º Long. W). The fleet increased from 9 to 41 units between 1986 and 1996. The annual average catch was 525 t in the
Caribbean area and 213 t for the Atlantic area. Tuna was the dominant species group in the landings, with averages of 73.2% in the
Caribbean Sea and 78.8% in the Atlantic Ocean. Yellowfin tuna (Thunnus albacares) was the most important species regarding
landings and CPUE, since it contributes 67.4% and 56% of the total catch in the Caribbean and Atlantic subareas, respectively.
Average annual CPUE for this species showed a decreasing trend for the evaluated period, with ranging values between 49.0 and 18.5
kg/100 hooks in the Caribbean and between 28.3 and 10.3 kg/100 hooks in the Atlantic. Incidental catch of other species included
white marlin (Tetrapturus albidus), sailfish (Isthiophorus albicans), blue marlin (Makaira nigricans), swordfish (Xiphias gladius), dolphinfish
(Coryphaena hippurus) and sharks (Carcharhinus spp. and Isurus spp.). For T. albacares significant differences were detected between
CPUEs corresponding to the Caribbean and Atlantic areas. However, no significant differences between areas were observed for T.
obesus, T. alalunga and Acanthocybium solandri.2002-01-01T00:00:00ZENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF THE WATERS OF THE MANZANARES RIVER, CUMANA-SUCRE, VENEZUELA

Título : ENVIRONMENTAL CONDITIONS OF THE WATERS OF THE MANZANARES RIVER, CUMANA-SUCRE, VENEZUELA

Resumen : ABSTRACT: The Manzanares River is one of the more important rivers of Venezuela inasmuch as it is used to supply drinking
water to a large part of the northeastern zone of Venezuela. For this reason a study was undertaken of the surface waters of the
estuarine zone of the river, following the saline gradient from zero to salinities greater than 30. The following properties were
measured: river volume flow, rainfall, pH, temperature, suspended materials, dissolved oxygen and ammonium, and heavy metals
(Fe, Mn, Cu, Zn, Ni, Cr, Pb and Cd) in particulate and dissolved phases. River volume flow varied with seasonal rainfall throughout
the year, as expected, while temperature varied between 24.5 and30.4 oC and pH ranged from 6.65 and 8.9. From the dry to the wet
season, suspended material increased from 23 to 880 mg/l at low salinity, and always decreased progressively as salinity increased.
Concentrations of total ammonium, 14.5 to 14.3 mmol/l, were high, while those of dissolved oxygen, 3.57 to 5.27 ml/l, were low, and
these levels were even more accentuated at salinities under 5 during the dry season. The highest concentrations found for heavy
metals were: Fe 406.02; Mn 5.57; Zn 2.18; Cu 0.72; Cr 0.19; Ni 0.72; Pb 0.12; Cd 0.03 mmol/l. These surpass Venezuelan legal limits
for water intended for human consumption as well as for waters to be discharged in coastal areas. Concentrations decreased at
increased salinity because of the dilution effect, flocculation and/or precipitation in the form of oxyhydroxides. The results obtained
in this study reveal a serious deterioration of the state of the waters of the lower Manzanares river.
