ESPECIE NUEVA DE Atractus (SERPENTES: COLUBRIDAE) DEL MACIZO DEL TURIMIQUIRE, TRAMO ORIENTAL DE LA CORDILLERA DE LA COSTA, VENEZUELA

Abstract

RESUMEN: Se describe una especie nueva de serpiente del género Atractus, de hábitos subterráneos, procedente de las zonas altas del Macizo del Turimiquire, en la región nororiental de Venezuela (Estado Anzoátegui). Esta especie se distingue de sus congéneres más cercanos por la combinación de los siguientes caracteres: (1) 17-17-17 hileras de escamas dorsales, lisas, sin fosetas apicales; (2) dorso de color pardo uniforme, sin manchas o líneas longitudinales; (3) superficie ventral de color marfil con tonalidades amarillas y manchas irregulares pardo oscuras; (4) 7-8 escamas infralabiales; (5) 6-7 dientes maxilares; (6) escamas ventrales: 157 en el macho y 165 en la hembra; (7) subcaudales: 26 en el macho y 24 en la hembra; (8) 7 escamas supralabiales; (9) primera escama temporal no agrandada. Este nuevo taxón representa el primer registro de Atractus para los ecosistemas de tierras altas en el Estado Anzoátegui. ABSTRACT: The paper depicts a new species of burrowing snake of the Atractus genus found in the Turimiquire massif highlands of the state of Anzoátegui, in eastern Venezuela. This species can be distinguished from its congeners by the combination of the following taxonomic attributes: (1) rows of smooth, dorsal scales without apical pits in a 17- 17-17 arrangement; (2 ) A uniform brown dorsum, without longitudinal spots or stripes; (3) a ventral ivory colored surface with dark brown, irregular spots; (4) 7-8 infralabial scales; (5) 6-7 maxillary teeth; (6) ventral scales numbering 157 in the male and 165 in the female; (7) subcaudal scales numbering 26 in the male and 24 in the female. (8) 7 supralabial scales; (9) a non-enlarged first temporal scale. This new taxon represents the first record of an Attractus species inhabiting the highland ecosystem in the state of Anzóategui.
